About Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is direct training, or regulation, of brain function by which the brain learns to function more efficiently.

The brain is monitored in action, moment to moment and “rewarded” for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns (as compared to statistical norms from a database).  This is a gradual learning process.  It applies to any aspect of cortical function that can be measured in terms of electrical activity.

Neurofeedback is also called EEG Biofeedback, because it is based on electrical brain activity, the electroencephalogram, or EEG.  Neurofeedback is training in self-regulation.  It is simply biofeedback applied to the brain directly.  Self-regulation is a necessary part of good brain function.  Self-regulation training allows the system (the central nervous system) to function better.

Neurofeedback addresses problems of brain dysregulation.  These are numerous and range from inconvenient to debilitating.  Neurofeedback has been shown to improve imbalances that include:

  • Anxiety-depression spectrum
  • Attention deficits
  • Behavior disorders
  • Sleep disorders,
  • ADHD
  • OCD
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Emotional disturbances.

Neurofeedback also has a specialized application for enhancing cognitive function related to high level mental performance.  High level Athletes, Musicians, Artists and Executives benefit from Neurofeedback Assessment and Treatment.

FAQs

Is Neurofeedback a cure?

In children, we are especially concerned with the more “intractable” brain-based problems such as disruptive behavior disorders, mood disorders, autistic spectrum and pervasive developmental delay, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury and birth trauma.

Many children have sleep problems that can be helped such as Bed wetting, Sleep walking, sleep talking, Teeth grinding, Nightmares, Night terrors.

Our program can help with many of the problems of adolescence including drug abuse, suicidal behavior, anxiety and depression.

We can also help to maintain good brain function as people age.  The good news is that almost any brain, regardless of its level of function, can be trained to function better.

What happens during an assessment?

During the initial assessment, we apply electrodes to the scalp with a specialized electrode cap to listen in on brainwave activity. The electrodes simply measure brain waves and are in no way dangerous or painful.  The brainwave activity recorded by our system is then uploaded and filed.  This information is then processed and and we extract information about certain key brainwave frequencies. Analysis of this data provides us with specific information about the individual’s brainwave activity and the specific imbalances that are to be addressed.

What happens during training?

After analyzing the inactive and overactive patterns of the brain’s activity, a training protocol is established.  Specific electrodes are placed back on the scalp of the person and the brain will now attempt to begin to change its activity level through the customized training program we create for you.  The training program includes a combination of sight, sound and possibly movement stimulation.  Some frequencies will be promoted and other frequencies will be diminished in response to your specific analysis.

Most training is presented in the form of a program that appears similar to a video game.  The person is effectively playing the video game with his or her brain.  Eventually, the brainwave activity is “shaped” toward more desirable, more regulated performance in response to the game stimuli.  The frequencies we target, and the specific locations on the scalp where we listen in on the brain, are specific to the conditions we are trying to address, and specific to the individual based on our initial assessment.

What conditions can it help?

In children, we are especially concerned with the more “intractable” brain-based problems such as disruptive behavior disorders, bipolar disorder, autistic spectrum and pervasive developmental delay, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury and birth trauma.

Many children have sleep problems that can be helped such as Bed wetting, Sleep walking, sleep talking, Teeth grinding, Nightmares, Night terrors.

We can also be helpful with many of the problems of adolescence including drug abuse, self injury, anxiety and depression.

We can also help to maintain good brain function as people get older. The good news is that almost any brain, regardless of its level of function, can be trained to function better.

Do training effects last?

If the problem being addressed is one of brain dysregulation, then the answer is yes, and that covers a lot of ground.  Neurofeedback involves learning by the brain and if that brings order out of disorder, the brain will continue to use its new capabilities, and thus reinforce them.

The situation is different when we are dealing with degenerative conditions like Parkinson’s or Dementia, or when we are working against continuing insults to the system, as may be the case in the autism spectrum. In such cases the training needs to be continued at some level over time.  Allergic susceptibilities and food intolerances make it more difficult to hold the gains.  Poor digestive function will pose a problem, as does poor nutrition.  A child living in a toxic environment (in either the physical or the psychological sense) will have more difficulty retaining good function.

When addressing a topic such as permanence it should be noted within the context of ‘cause’.  If the cause of decreased brain (neurological) function is food related, only so much progress can be established or maintained without addressing the root cause.  This applies to almost any context related to changes in neurological function.  So the approach of our clinic is to offer several modalities that are standalone therapies.  These are combined with Neurofeedback to produce dramatic benefits to address neurological dysfunctions and disorders that arise from a variety of sources.  The modalities offered by this clinic are Manual Osteopathy, Functional Neurology, Naturopathy, Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy.  Combining some or all of these modalities can have truly powerful results and affect significant long term change over the period of a course of treatment.

How many sessions will I need in total?

The ability of the brain to learn to function better and how quickly this happens depends on several key factors:

  • The context and cause of the condition
  • How chronic the condition has been
  • The age of the individual
  • How the individual brain responds to training

We recommend starting with 10 sessions and monitor the changes that you recognize within your life. Most people will see changes at this point and may only require infrequent maintenance treatments from then on.

Where do I go from here?

After many years of refining our Assessment and Treatment protocols we offer the following program.

Assessment: Base brain wave measurements are recorded, uploaded, analyzed and a report is generated outlining all areas of brainwave activity and function.

Neurological Consultation: Once the analysis and report are generated our Functional Neurologist will meet with you to review and discuss the analysis of your brainwave measurements.  Based on this consultation, specific recommendations will be made and recorded to customize your treatment protocol.

Treatment:  Based on the recommendations of our Functional Neurologist, each of the 10 treatments are adjusted to your specific needs.  For example, your first treatment will not be as difficult or demanding as your 5th treatment as your brain is learning new patterns.  Your 9th and 10th treatments on the other hand may have aspects to it that your first 6 or 7 treatments may not have had.  It is all based on your specific analysis and condition to maximize your treatment effectiveness.

The underlying conditions as well as the obvious and perceived symptoms that clients seek Neurofeedback Assessment and Treatment for vary widely.  Even though Neurofeedback has been used for several decades the general public is still not very aware of the use and benefits.  If you still have specific questions related to your situation we offer a free 30 minute consulation either by phone or in person.  Please contact us or call our clinic at 416.917.9090 to book your free consultation.  We welcome your questions and inquiries and will do our best to provide the answers you seek.
